Marlborough Cricket Club marked a proud moment in its 250-year history this week, as the club’s new girl's team played their first ever hardball cricket match at home to Potterne on Wednesday 21st May.
Led brilliantly by captain Jemima Prest, the team showed tremendous spirit and skill as they took to the field to make their debut. Potterne girl's team has many years of cricket experience, but notwithstanding the number of wickets lost, Marlborough posted a very credible 59 runs in 16 overs, in response to Potterne’s 104.
The atmosphere throughout the match was full of positivity, encouragement, and mutual respect, with both teams cheering each other on in the true spirit of the game. There were many moments of excellent bowling, fielding, and batting on show from both teams, and the players should be immensely proud of how they represented their clubs.
This was about much more than the result, it was about firmly establishing girl’s cricket at Marlborough Cricket Club, and this team has done exactly that. The club is immensely proud of them and we look forward to seeing the team grow and develop.
Marlborough girls now look forward to their next match on Sunday 1st June, away to Chippenham. With this historic game now under their belts, the future of girl's cricket at Marlborough is bright and full of promise. Well done, girls - you’ve made history!
